Brushing and Flossing
When you have braces, it's very important to brush and floss at least twice a day. Brushing and flossing with braces is essential to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent issues like cavities, gum disease, and tooth discoloration.
Brushing with Braces
-
Choose the Right Toothbrush:
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush with an orthodontic head.
-
Brush Thoroughly:
- Brush at least twice a day, ideally after every meal.
- Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to clean the top and bottom of the brackets.
- Brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.
-
Use Fluoride Toothpaste:
- Strengthen enamel and prevent cavities by using fluoride toothpaste.
-
Don't Rush:
- Spend at least 2-3 minutes brushing, ensuring you clean all areas around the braces.
Flossing after every meal will help keep your teeth and braces clean, which will also help keep your treatment time on track.
Flossing with Braces
-
Floss Threader or Orthodontic Floss:
- Use a floss threader to guide floss under the wires.
- Alternatively, use orthodontic floss pre-threaded for braces.
-
Step-by-Step Flossing:
- Slide the floss gently between your teeth, avoiding snapping it.
- Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and move it up and down.
- Repeat for each tooth.
-
Water Flossers (Optional):
- Consider using a water flosser for convenience and to clean hard-to-reach areas.
Additional Tips:
- Rinse with Mouthwash: Use an alcohol-free fluoride mouthwash for extra protection.
- Regular Dental Checkups: Visit your dentist and orthodontist for routine cleanings and adjustments.
